How VICPA helped creative freelancers recover payments owed to them.
In November 2023, VICPA caught wind of a group of creative freelancers who were owed payment from a local production house “6262” [not their real name]. VICPA then reached out to this group and invited them to be part of VICPA to seek payment from 6262 on their behalf.
A group call was hosted by VICPA and the affected freelancers where VICPA learned about the scale of the amounts owed and the plights of the affected. From this call, 8 freelancers came forward to be part of the first group to receive help from VICPA.
VICPA’S officers and Exco approached 6262 and began negotiations on a repayment plan. A 3-tranche payment plan was finally proposed and agreed upon by the 8 freelancers. VICPA’s officers actively helped to check the payments were delivered as promised. 6262 made good on the first 2 payments but was not able to complete the final tranche as it continued to face business difficulties. As more freelancers came forward to seek assistance, VICPA sought advice from NTUC’s considerable expertise and proposed to the remaining affected freelancers to file their claims at the Small Claims Tribunal. VICPA guided members through this process and aided with filing fees.
Jaye Neo, one of the initial 8 freelancers who received VICPA’s assistance, appreciated VICPA’s help, “VICPA was able to represent all of us as a group and that really helped to resolve the issue. Especially for those who are more junior, they needed a friend like VICPA to give good advice and help in such matters.”
